Make a holiday of it

Lake Como is one of those places that gets under your skin immediately. We've spent time exploring its villages, waterways, and hillside gardens — and we want you to experience as much of it as you can. Here are our personal picks for making the most of your time on the lake.

Towns worth exploring

Our favourite

Bellagio

Perched at the tip of the central peninsula where the lake splits, Bellagio is the jewel of Lake Como. Wander its cobblestone alleys, browse the boutiques along Salita Serbelloni, and linger over an aperitivo on the lakeside piazza. The ferry connections to other towns make it the perfect base.

✦ Don't miss: Aperitivo at Caffè Rossi overlooking the water

A hidden gem

Varenna

A quieter, more romantic alternative to Bellagio — Varenna's pastel fishing village feel is utterly charming. Walk the lakeside promenade (the Passeggiata degli Innamorati — "Lovers' Walk"), and visit the terraced gardens of Villa Monastero. A short ferry hop from Bellagio.

✦ Don't miss: Sunset from the castello ruins above town

Worth the trip

Menaggio

A lively lakeside town on the western shore, Menaggio has a lovely main piazza perfect for people-watching and a great selection of restaurants. It's also the starting point for several scenic hiking trails up into the mountains, with panoramic views of the lake below.

✦ Don't miss: The lakeside passeggiata at golden hour

For the views

Como Town

The city of Como at the southern tip of the lake is a great half-day trip — explore the magnificent Gothic–Renaissance Duomo, walk the old city walls, and take the funicolare up to Brunate for sweeping views of the whole lake and Alps beyond.

✦ Don't miss: The Brunate funicolare — only €3.50 each way

Things to do

Must-see

Villa del Balbianello

One of the most photographed spots in all of Italy — this 18th-century villa sits on a wooded promontory jutting into the lake near Lenno. The terraced gardens are extraordinary, and the views are unmatched. You may recognise it from Casino Royale and Star Wars. Accessible by boat or a short hike from Lenno.

✦ Book ahead: timed entry fills quickly in spring

On the water

Private Boat Hire

The best way to see Lake Como is from the water. Self-drive electric boats can be hired by the hour from several operators in Bellagio — no licence required. Alternatively, hire a skipper for the day and explore the lake's hidden coves, villas, and smaller towns at your own pace.

✦ Tip: Morning hours have the calmest water

For garden lovers

Villa Carlotta

Located in Tremezzo (directly opposite our hotel), Villa Carlotta is famous for its spectacular spring gardens — April is peak bloom season for azaleas, rhododendrons, and camellias. The neoclassical villa also houses an impressive collection of sculpture and paintings.

✦ Perfect timing: April is the absolute best month to visit

For the adventurous

Hiking the Greenway

The Greenway del Lago is a 10 km scenic trail along the western shore connecting Colonno to Cadenabbia, passing through chestnut forests and terraced olive groves with stunning lake views throughout. The route passes right by Villa del Balbianello — a great way to combine both in a half day.

✦ Wear layers: mornings on the trail can be cool

Where to eat

Bellagio — Dinner

Ristorante Silvio

A family-run institution since 1919, just north of Bellagio. Silvio catches his own fish fresh from the lake every morning — the missoltino (dried agone fish) and lavarello (lake whitefish) are exceptional. Ask for a table on the terrace. Reservations essential.

Varenna — Lunch

Vecchia Varenna

Tucked right at the water's edge in Varenna's harbour, this is one of the most scenic lunch spots on the lake. Fresh pasta, lake fish, and a glass of local Valtellina wine — it doesn't get more Italian than this. The risotto con pesce persico is a must.

Bellagio — Aperitivo

Terrazza Barchetta

The rooftop terrace of Hotel Barchetta in central Bellagio is the go-to spot for an Aperol spritz as the sun goes down over the lake. The views of the Bellagio waterfront from above are stunning — arrive early for the best seats as it fills up fast.

Tremezzo — Casual

Pizzeria Il Molo

When you want something simple and unpretentious after a long day on the lake, Il Molo delivers excellent wood-fired pizza right on the Tremezzo waterfront. Great value, generous portions, and a lively atmosphere. Our go-to for a casual evening meal.

Getting around: The car ferry and regular passenger ferries connect all major towns — buy a day pass for unlimited rides. Water taxis are more expensive but flexible.

Book ahead: April is shoulder season — restaurants and boat hire are available but popular spots fill quickly, especially on weekends. A day or two in advance is usually enough.

Cash & cards: Most restaurants and shops accept cards, but smaller village cafés may prefer cash. ATMs are available in Bellagio and Como town.

Language: English is widely spoken in tourist areas, but a few words of Italian go a long way. Grazie (thank you), per favore (please), and un caffè, per favore (a coffee, please) will serve you well.
